About Pie Town, New Mexico

Yes, Pie Town is a real place. It sits just next to the Continental Divide in Western New Mexico. While the town itself is home to only about 60 people, the local Post Office serves about 200 families. We are 70 miles from the nearest hospital, movie theater, or major shopping area.

The town has two cafés, a post office, a few mechanics and contractors, three churches, a campground, an RV park, a volunteer fire and EMS department, a general store, a windmill museum, and a community center. That's about it. Catron County (nearly 7,000 square miles) is larger than Connecticut, Delaware, or Rhode Island, yet has less than 4,000 residents. The combined senior class size for the county's two high schools is normally less than twenty.

Why do people live here? Well, if the above description doesn't sound idyllic to you, there's probably no point in explaining. People live in Pie Town more for what it doesn't have — pollution, noise, politicians, crowds, and bright lights. In fact, this area boasts some of the nation's darkest skies, making it a haven for serious astronomers. They say that there are five elk to every person living here, which makes the big game hunting legendary.

The items carried in this store really are made by Pie Town residents. Granted, the T-shirts themselves are not manufactured here, nor are the books and cards actually printed here, but the creative side of every item in this store is pure Pie Town. Your purchase helps rural artists and authors stay that way — out in the middle of nowhere, where they have the time and space to think.

Thanks for visiting the Pie Town Store!
